54% of people in Mbale have multiple sex partners, Robert Wandwasi the Mbale District HIV Focal person has revealed.
Wandwasi while speaking at a regional training for media practitioners on HIV and Gender Sensitive Reporting at Pretoria Hotel today said that such a trend is worrying. The training was organized by the Uganda Aids Commission
Wandwasi adds that statistics also show that only 50% of multiple sex partners use condoms. He says the fact that half of the population in Mbale does not use condoms, new HIV infections are recorded. He says consistent use of condoms is important in the fight against HIV.
Lillian Tatwebwa a communications officer with Uganda Aids Commission said multiple sex partners and poverty are fuelling HIV spread in the country.
According to Tatwebwa, 1.3 million people are living with HIV in Uganda with 52,000 new infections being registered in 2018. 26,000 people died of HIV related illnesses in 2018.
