A blood shortage has hit the Mbale Regional Blood Bank.
Ahmed Bumba the Director Mbale Regional Blood Bank says that they had anticipated collecting at least 4,000 units of blood this month. Bumba however says that they have only managed to collect 1,600 units.
Bumba says that the shortfall cannot enable them to sufficiently supply health facilities across the six sub-regions of Bukedi, Bugisu, Karamoja, Busoga and Sebei.
Bumba says that the blood shortage is as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic where all schools and higher institutions of learning are closed. He says schools and higher institutions of learning were the biggest blood donors.
