A section of National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary aspirants in Mbale, Sironko and Butaleja have welcomed President Yoweri Museveni’s stance on violence during elections.
President Museveni this week warned that government will not tolerate any one engaging in violent electoral acts. Museveni described those engaging in violence during elections as idiots who would be dealt with accordingly.
Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament Connie Nakayenze Galiwango says that many aspirants want to use violence as means of canvassing for votes. According to Nakayenze, the president was right to describe such persons as idiots. She says that people should engage in peaceful campaigns free of malice and violence.
Jackson Kisolo an aspirant for the Budadiri West Parliamentary seat in Sironko District on NRM ticket says that the political season should not be a matter of life and death. Kisolo says aspirants should engage in issue based campaigning and desist from character assassination.
Yusuf Mutembuli who is vying for the Bunyole East MPs seat in Butaleja District says that the President’s message against violence should be embraced by politicians. Mutembuli says that voters should be allowed to select their preferred candidates after thorough consideration.
